Product Description
In this report, Cathy Davidson and David Theo Goldberg focus on the potential for shared and interactive learning made possible by the Internet. They argue that the single most important characteristic of the Internet is its capacity for world-wide community and the limitless exchange of ideas. The Internet brings about a way of learning that is not new or revolutionary but is now the norm for today’s graduating high school and college classes. It is for this reas… <noindex>More >></noindex>

College recruiting is where colleges and students alike take the time to evaluate any special talents and or abilities that students or potential students have that sets them apart from others. Many universities and colleges have Offices that are usually called The Office of Advising and Recruiting or wording to that effect. These offices are there to help both incoming students and those that are already in college by advising the students about programs relevant to their academic goal as well as their personal and career goals. These advisors are there twofold. They are there to make sure their university or college gets the best students they can recruit and after recruitment they are there to make sure the student lives up to their potential or exceeds their potential.

The potential student that wants to be accepted to a certain university or college will want to start thinking about their recruitment profile as early as the start of high school. This is especially true if the university or college that you want to attend has specific targeted interests as in a Technology School or perhaps Engineering school, or even one of the Ivy League schools. All these will have certain criteria that have to be met before admission. It is up to the potential student to learn what these criteria are and focus their studies on them as well as it is up to the current university or college student to make sure they focus on the correct classes to reflect the reason the college admitted them.

This is a lot to try to pull together alone. Luckily, there are qualified companies available who help students become marketable and thus increase their chances of being recruited for the college or university of their choice. This service takes a lot of the stress out of the search for the perfect college or university as well as gives crucial information about the admission and recruiting process that many parents and students don’t know. These companies will be familiar with colleges and universities all over the U.S and will be able to give the potential student a lot of exposure to college recruiters.

These type companies are basically service companies. They put students in touch with the university or college that fits them best both academically and personally. The recruiting and admissions service company will show the parent and student where they need to plan and show what areas of study or personal area that needs to be focused on more. These companies have been through the college recruiting process many times and can literally increase the new student’s chances with College placement, recruitment, grants and scholarships as well as Athletic recruitment

When looking to utilize a service company to help you or your child’s opportunity for any of these situations always research the company fully and ask any questions you might have before you sign with them. College and University recruitment and placement is a lengthy process that can be handled on your own but can be less stressful with a service company, particularly if you are new to the college process.

Are you a business owner who is interested in improving your business profits? If you are, you may be looking for new fun and exciting ways to market your business to the general public or at least your target market. When examining marketing promotions, you will find that you have a number of different options. With that in mind, you may want to place a large percentage of your focus on premiums and incentives.

Before outlining the benefits of using premiums and incentives to your advantage, it is best to focus on what they are. With examining premiums and incentives, you will find that they are basically reward programs. These are programs where you reward your customers for doing business with you. The rewards used can vary, but they often including discounts, merchandise, or travel certificates or rewards. One of the many reasons why premiums and incentives are so popular is because people love incentives, especially when it results in them getting good deals or free stuff.

Another one of the many reasons why premiums and incentives are not only successful, but ideal for business owners just like yourself, is because of all of the options that you have. A previously mentioned, you have options when it comes to the promotional gifts or incentives that you choose to offer your customers in the form of a rewards program. You also have options when it comes to determining which type of reward program or premiums and incentives program you would like to operate. If you weren’t aware, reward programs come in different formats, including those that are designed to receive a steady level of returning customers, as well as new customers.

When examining how you should use premiums and incentives to your advantage, you should know that many business owners have had success with loyalty programs. Loyalty programs are reward programs that are designed to reward your customers for coming back and doing business with you. Loyalty programs can not only help you increase your profits and the number of returning customers, but they can also help you save money when offering your customers premiums and incentives. For instance, if you ran a retail store that sells clothing or other fashion accessories, you may not want to offer promotional gifts, such as a vacation certificate or a digital camera, for the purchase of one outfit. In instances such as this one, rewarding your customers for doing business with overtime, through loyalty rewards, is best.

As previously stated, there are a number of promotional gifts that you can use as premiums and incentives. To ensure that your loyalty rewards or your new customer reward programs are working to your advantage, you will want to carefully choose your promotional gifts. This is extremely important, as many consumers will not “waste,” their time on premiums and incentives that are not attractive or even worth the look. For that reason, you may want to carefully research each of your options, in terms of premiums and incentives for reward programs. You may even want to create a small group of individuals in your business to survey the community or at least develop ideas as to which promotional gifts your business can benefit from.

Speaking of promotional gifts, once you have determined what premiums and incentives you would like your reward programs, like loyalty rewards, to include, you may wonder where you can get those gifts from. Unfortunately, this is where many business owners make a costly mistake. You do not want to go right to one of your shopping centers and purchase new digital camera or purchase vacation certificates through one of your travel. This approach is one that can be costly. Instead, you may want to take the time to examine companies that specialize in reward programs, as well as those that have a focus on promotional gifts. These companies often give you access to in demand gifts, but at a fraction of the costs.

As a reminder, marketing promotions come in a number of different formats. If you are truly interested in improving your business and its profits, premiums and incentives are a marketing promotion that you must not pass up.

Are you a business owner who sells a product or a service to the general public? If you do and if you are looking to see an increase in your customer base, as well as an increase in sales, you will want to take steps to market your business to the general public or your targeted market. One of the many ways that you can go about doing so is through direct mail promotions.

As a business owner, there is a good chance that you are already familiar with direct mail promotions. In fact, you may have even used them to your advantage before. With that in mind, you are urged to take what you know and push it aside for the time being. This is because many business owners, possibly even you, have been using direct marketing promotions to their advantage, but many have been doing so in the wrong ways. To make the most out of direct mail promotions, you will want to continue reading on.

The first mistake that many business owners make, especially those who are small business owners, is having one individual be responsible for their direct mail promotions. That one individual is also likely responsible for developing new sales promotion ideas for your business and your marketing campaigns. Yes, this approach may work in some cases, but you may want to consider having at least two or three employees focus on your direct mail promotions, as well as come up with new sales promotion ideas for you business to make good use of. This may not only improve your success with direct mail promotions, but with your other marketing campaigns as well.

Another mistake that many business owners and their marketing specialist or specialists make is by not coming up with new sales promotion ideas. Many decide to stick with marketing campaigns and promotions that they already know can be successful. While this approach may seem like good idea to you, it is important to remember that running a business is all about taking risks. Should those risks, which in this case would be new sales promotion ideas, not payoff, it would simply mean that you have to return to the drawing board. With that in mind, should your new sales promotion ideas work to your advantage, you may see an increase in sales, as well as an increase in profits, which is the goal of every business owner.

The above mentioned methods are just a few of the many approaches that you can take to make your next direct mail promotions campaign a successful one. In keeping with direct marketing promotions, you may want to consider incorporating your rewards program into your future direct marketing promotions. Direct mail promotions often involve sending important information and updates, often in the forms of newsletters or fliers, to the general public by way of the internet or snail mail. By having your direct mail promotions and your reward programs go hand in hand, it should be difficult for you to see any result other than success.

In keeping with using direct mail promotions to educate and inform the community on any reward programs that you may be currently running, it is important that you have a reward program in place. If you are currently not using reward programs to your advantage you will want to do so and right away. Reward programs are programs where you, essentially, reward your customers with free gifts or other incentives for doing business with you. Many business owners with high priced services or products rely on new customer reward programs and those with lower priced services or products often rely on loyalty reward programs, but the decision is yours to make. With that in mind, whatever decision you do make, use your direct mail promotions to your advantage.

As outlined above, there are a number of sales promotion ideas that you and your marketing specialist can use to your advantage. By regularly staying up-do-date on the latest news in advertising and marketing, you and your business should be poised for success.

Copyright (c) 2009 Marc Hill

In recent days the Democratic Leaders of the House of Representatives have publicized their plan to address the economy with a massive $825 billion dollar stimulus package designed to, well you know, I haven’t quite figured this one out yet. I ‘m still stuck on the first stimulus package of $700 billion -or was it $725- I’m sure it was seven hundred and something.

At this rate of spending and future taxation (coming soon to your doorstep), it’s irrelevant. To add anxiety to an already frightening non stop spending binge, the leaders in the Senate are working on their own stimulus version of “let’s make a deal with the taxpayers.”

So as we calculate the age of our great (or maybe great, great) grandchildren will be when they stop paying for this lunacy, the congressional draft does shed light on what our elected officials are thinking in terms of providing assistance with higher educational costs. So let’s take a look.

The draft directs $15.6 billion to increase Pell Grants by $500, to $5,350, in the 2009-2010 school years. Pell grants do not have to be repaid and you must demonstrate financial need (FAFSA must be filed) in order to be considered. Most Pell awards go to students with the highest financial need with family incomes below $30,000. This is certainly in line with the founding philosophy behind the Pell grant and with then candidate Obama’s desire to make college more affordable to people who demonstrate the highest economic need.

In line with the above economic need principle, the draft directs an additional $490 million to the work study program. Work study programs provide part-time employment to students during the school year based on financial need (FAFSA must be filed) to assist with college costs. The Federal government pays a portion of the student’s salary, making it economical for businesses and university departments to employ the student.

The draft also calls for an increase in federal limits to the Unsubsidized Stafford Loan. Unsubsidized Stafford loans are federally guaranteed loans that are not based on financial need; however, you must submit the FAFSA application for consideration. Interest or payment of principle can be deferred until six months after graduation or six months after you drop below half time status as long as you capitalize the loan. In effect, this adds the deferred interest to the balance of the loan thereby increasing your debt.

The congressional draft also calls for the simplification of the educational tax credits. It directs $12.5 billion to replace the Hope tax credit (current credit is $1,800 for the first $2,400 in qualified educational expenses during your child’s first two years in college assuming income qualifications are met) with a new credit worth up to $2,500 coupled with an increase in income limits so that more may take advantage of this credit. And to be fair to those individuals who don’t pay enough in taxes to qualify for this new credit, our esteemed collegeas in Congress propose a partially-refundable credit of 40 percent of the $2,500 (equally $1,000) for these folks. Sheesh!

Another $79 billion over two years for the newly created fund called the “State Fiscal Stabilization Fund.” This money is given to states with direction to its governors to spend the money in such a manner as to restore their K-12 and higher education budgets to their 2008 levels. The governors only have to spend 61 percent of this money as above, which leaves an additional 39 percent to be spent on “public safety and other governmental services.”

Finally, for the most underfunded part of the Draft, $50 million to the Department of Education for “oversight” purposes. Good old oversight, how in the world could we forget this. It worked like a well oiled machine in the first stimulus package.

As far as I can see and keeping college in mind, this represents the most significant aspects of the draft that directly affects families. Additional money is being spent on grants for research on energy, greenhouse gases, and rebuilding of infrastructure.

How much and in what form any of this will actually occur is anybody’s guess. Secretary of Education- elect Arne Duncan indicated during his confirmation hearing that he believes in increasing federal investment in college tuition.

In this light, the draft increases the maximum Pell Grant to $5,350 plus additional work study dollars (average work study award $1,600) with a refundable tax credit of $1,000, representing a total of $7,950 in free money to this group. Mission accomplished- it’s anybody’s guess since the mission has not been clearly stated and more input is forthcoming.

The only person to date that hasn’t chimed in on the specifics is the President. However, as stated earlier, much is in line with the then candidate’s beliefs that more funding needs to be directed to students of economically challenged parents. Considering his lobbying efforts on behalf of the draft, the conclusion may be that he is pleased.

The hardest part of writing is the first sentence. When you look at the whole project, it seems like an impossible task. That’s why you have to break it down into manageable tasks. Think of it as running a marathon. Many who set out to run a marathon hope to finish. That’s why they start in the first place they have a goal in mind. What is your goal in writing an article?

You have an idea of what the finished product is going to be but you’re not sure how to go about putting it all together. It seems like such a hard thing to do especially if you don’t feel overly confident about writing. Well, just like the marathon, you have to take it one step at a time.

The first thing you have to do, as if you actually were a marathon runner, is to get organized.

Instead of running gear, however, you must organize your thoughts. There are some steps you should take before you begin writing an article. Once you’ve gone through the following list, you will be ready to actually begin writing.

Beginning Steps to Writing an article.

First, figure out your article’s working title. Jot down a few different titles, and eventually, you’ll find that one that will grow on you. Titles help you to focus your writing on your topic; they guide you in anticipating and answering your reader’s queries. Many non-fiction books also have subtitles.

Break your articles up into smaller chunks with subtitles. Readers like to scan an article to see if it pertains to what they are interested in. Aim for clarity in your titles and use subtitles that pertain to the specific paragraph.

What is Your Thesis?

Next, write out a thesis statement. Your thesis is a sentence or two stating exactly what problem you are addressing and how your article will solve that problem. All paragraphs spring forth from your thesis statement. Once you’ve got your thesis statement fine-tuned, you’ve built your foundation. This foundation is what will help keep you on track.

When you’re writing an article you need to use the same process as writing a book, ebook or anything elese. Keeping your thesis in mind will keep you focused while you write. Remember: all paragraphs must support your thesis statement. If they don’t, they don’t belong in your article.

For example, your thesis statement could read: We’ve all experienced insomnia at times in our lives, but there are twenty proven techniques and methods to help you overcome insomnia.

Once you have your thesis, before you start to write, make sure there is a good reason for writing your artilce. Ask yourself some questions.

Does your article present useful information and is that information currently relevant?

Will your article positively affect the lives of your readers?

Is your article dynamic and will it keep the reader’s attention?

Does you article answer questions that are meaningful and significant?

If you can answer yes to these questions, you can feel confident about the effectiveness of your article. Next, make a list of the reasons you are writing your article.

Do you want to promote your business?

Do you want to bring quality traffic to your website?

Do you want to enhance your reputation?

Then write down your goals in terms of publishing.

Do you want to add it to other articles and put together a short ebook to sell as a product on your website.

Do you want to offer it as a free gift for filling out a survey or for ordering a product?

Do you want to create an e-course, or use your ebook to attract affiliates around the world?

The more you know upfront, the easier the actual writing will be.

If you’re putting together an ebook then you need to decide on the format of your chapters. In non-fiction, keep the format from chapter to chapter fairly consistent. Perhaps you plan to use an introduction to your chapter topic, and then divide it into four subhead topics. Or you may plan to divide it into five parts, each one beginning with a relevant anecdote.

Write with a casual, conversational tone rather than a formal tone such as textbook diction. Reader’s respond to the feeling that you are having a conversation with them. Break up the length and structure of your sentences so you don’t bore your readers to sleep. Sentences that are all the same length and structure tend to keep your readers more alert.

Good writing takes a lot of practice. Make a schedule to write a little everyday. Read books and magazines about the process of writing, and jot down tips that jump out at you. The art of writing is a lifetime process; the more you write (and read), the better your writing will become. The better your writing becomes, the bigger your sales figures.

Make use of lists, both bulleted and numbered. This makes your information easy to absorb, and gives the reader a mental break from dissecting your paragraphs one after the other.

Finally, decide on an easy-to-read design. Find a font that’s easy on the eyes, and stick to that font family.

Using dozens of fonts will only tire your readers out before they’ve gotten past your introduction. Use text that is large enough to be read easily on the screen, but small enough so that the whole page can be seen on a computer screen. You will have to experiment with this to find the right combination.

Of course, don’t forget to run a spell and grammar check. You are judged by something as minor as correct punctuation, so don’t mess up a great artticle by tossing out semicolons randomly, or stringing sentences together with commas.

These are the basic guidelines to writing an article. You can use these same basic principles to writing a book, newsletter, blog or any other type or writing. Once you get started you will find that writing will become easier as time goes on. Before you know it you will have enough articles on your topic to put a book together.

One of the fastest ways to transform your web site and promotional materials into a client magnet is to add your personality.

(And yes, even if you’re trying to build a business bigger then you, you still want to add your personality. People want to do business with people, not faceless, nameless corporations.)

Now, there are a few ways to do this, including branding and graphics, but what I’m going to focus on in this article is how to do it through words. Remember, the stronger your personality shows in your writing, the more loyal your customers and clients will be, and the more mo^ney you’ll ultimately make.

So, here are 5 ways to add your personality to your writing:

1. Read more. The more you read, the more you’ll learn how to express yourself in writing. Not only will you learn by example (especially if you read things by writers with very strong personalities) but you’ll start to absorb ways to express yourself using words that you’ll be able to transfer to your own writing.

2. Write more. Sorry, there’s no getting around it. The more you do something, the better you’ll get at it, (and yes that includes writing). Start a blog, write articles for your web site, write letters to your friends, it doesn’t matter what it is but just start writing.

3. Keep a journal. I know this sounds like more writing (and technically it is) but it’s a different kind of writing. It’s more like exercising (okay, maybe that’s not a great analogy either). Basically, journaling works because it gives your muse a way to “come out and play.” And the more you can access your muse, the easier it will be to bring your personality out while you’re writing.

When I say journal, what I mean is get out a pen and paper and start writing. Yes, I want you writing by hand. No computers. Something magical happens when you write by hand versus type. And just write about anything that comes up. (Nothing comes up? Write “I have nothing to say” until you find you DO have something to say.) Do this regularly and you’ll be amazed at how much easier it gets to bring your personality into your writing.

4. Read out loud. This is a trick actors do. They read things out loud and listen to their breathing, their phrasing, etc. This is a great way to find your actual “voice” which you then can transfer to writing.

You don’t have to read things you’ve written either. Read novels and nonfiction and articles and anything that strikes your fancy. And really listen to how you say it. Everyone reads things differently because you put your own personality in it, and that can translate to your writing.

5. Write in other people’s voice. This is a trick artists do. When they learn to paint, they paint in the style of other great artists. By studying how other people paint, you’ll start to pick up some of their techniques. You incorporate what works in your style and abandon what doesn’t. And by studying other people’s styles, you’ll start to be able to break down your own style, and thus you’ll understand how to strengthen it.

You can use this for your writing. Imitate writers, especially ones who have styles you feel drawn to. Here’s how you do it: First, copy a passage they wrote word for word. You might want to do it a few times. Then write something different, but do it in their style. Keep practicing until writing in their style becomes second nature.

But, this should strictly be an exercise. Don’t try and copy other people’s writing styles and pass them off as your own. Not only will it come across as inauthentic and more likely turn off your target market, but depending on what you do, you could end up in legal trouble.

Even if you only incorporate a few of these tips, you should start to see a shift in your own writing. Before you know it, your personality will start shining through, and with it, you’ll start to see more clients, more sales and more profits.

Developing an individual writing process is key to your success as a writer. Studies of struggling writers show that one of the reasons they struggle is that they focus on only one aspect of writing.

So what is the writing process? First it is important to note that there is no such thing as “the writing process”. Yes, there is a writing process that embraces the notion that there are certain essential steps that successful writers employ when writing but that process varies greatly depending on the writer and then individual writers also vary their process according to the writing task at hand. That means that there is no such as “the writing process” but that a personal, individual writing process which you adjust to the varying circumstances of your writing can be tremendously helpful.

However, before you can begin to individualize your writing process and then adjust it to different tasks, you must learn more about the theory behind the writing process.

The theory of writing process begins with prewriting or invention stage. This is when you may need to do brainstorming, research, and planning to get started with your writing project. This is the stage that struggling writers spend the least time on and experienced writers spend much more time as they know that more attention and thought at this stage can save time and effort later. This stage may have a lot to show for it in terms of prewriting and research or it might take place primarily inside the writer’s brain. This depends on the individual writer, the complexity of the task, and the familiarity of the writer with the task.

Only after spending time at the prewriting stage do writers move on to drafting. This is where the actual writing takes place but encompasses more than one draft and several sessions of writing spread over time. Drafting focuses on simply getting words on paper and emptying the brain of ideas for this project.

Writers move on to revision after those early drafts have filled out and developed some substance. It is during the multiple drafts of the revision stage that the writing project shapes into something resembling the intended final project. The paper is not yet done but it looks and feels like the intended genre, the ideas are fully developed and the organization is functional.

Then writers move on the editing stage where they attend to correctness issues including cleaning up spelling, grammar, word choice, and polishing the writing. This is the correct time to deal with these issues as concentrating on them earlier in the writing process will slow down the development of ideas.

After editing, writers should seek out feedback for the final stage of the writing process to determine what further revision or editing might be necessary to complete the writing project. Feedback should be sought from skilled readers familiar with either the subject matter or the type of writing project so they can offer more informed review.

While each individual writing process will include some general variation of these elements it is important for writers to recognize that an effective writing process reflects their own individual strengths, weaknesses, and work habits. The writing process should also vary according to the project as well. Obviously a new, complex project will demand much more during prewriting and invention than a familiar topic and comfortable project genre.
